(Unila): Community-based total sanitation (STBM) constitutes a program to transform the community life styles, especially healthy and sanitary behaviors through community empowerment using the triggering method.

This program can be carried out independently by the community to break the chain of disease and poisoning guided by the STBM pillars. Open defecation free (ODF) is a condition when every individual in the community does not defecate in the open.

Disposal of feces that does not meet the requirements greatly influences the spread of environmental-based diseases. Thus, to stop transmission of faces disposal needs to be engineered so that community access to healthy toilets is targeted to reach 100% in all communities.

The STBM and ODF work programs were designed to reduce the risks of unhealthy lifestyles. The programs were carried out in Pekon Sanggi, Bandar Negeri Semuong District, Tanggamus Regency, on Saturday, February 3 2024.

In collaboration with the community health center and Pekon Sanggi, the students first collected the data of the community without toilets, then the data were submitted to the public health center.

This socialization initiated by Unila students was also concerned with the impacts of open defecation and samples of healthy toilets that are suitable for use.

This program is a national priority in tackling open defecation as Indonesia is number two the country with the highest rate of open defecation with 58 million people, and this could trigger stunting.

The community took advantages of this program from which communities have knowledge of changing habit of open defecation and increase their awareness of healthier life. [PR Team]
