Efforts to establish a college in Lampung arose from two committees in 1959, i.e. the Committee for the Establishment and Expansion of Continuing School ( P3SL ) in Tanjung Karang , chaired by Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam and secretary Tjan Djiit Soe : and the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Foundation of Lampung Higher Education ( P3YPTL ) formed in Jakarta on August 20, 1959 with Chairman Nadirsjah Zaini , MA and Secretary Hilman Hadikusuma. January 19, 1960 P3SL held a consultation with community leaders of Lampung to prepare for the establishment of a higher education institution. At that time P3SL gained its new name of Committee for the Establishment of Continuing School and Faculty ( P3SLF ) with Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam as the Chairman and Secretary Tjan Djiit Soe.
Dated on July 19, 1960, the Secretariat of the Faculty of Economics, Social and Law ( FEHS ) Lampung was opened in the hall of the former Hak Haw school building on Hasanuddin Street no.34 Teluk Betung by three students representing P3SLF, namely Hilman Hadikusuma , Alhusniduki Hamim , and Abdul Muis Radja Hukum . On September 7, 1960 after a meeting between P3SLF and P3YPTL , then both these committees merged into one foundation with the name of the Foundation Trustees of Lampung Higher Education ( YPPLT ) with certificates Deputy Notary MM Efendi No. 24 dated November 23 , 1960, which was in charge of fostering the newly-established faculty and making an effort to change its status to be a state university.
Based on the Decree of the President of Sriwijaya University ( dr.M.Isa ) No. D – 40-7-61 dated on February 14, 1961 , commencing on February 1, 1961, authorized the FEHS Lampung as a branch of the Faculty of Law of Sriwijaya University. On February 15, 1961 Hi.Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam was appointed as curator member of Sriwijaya University in Lampung based on Presidential Decree No. UP Unsri / 031 / C – 1/1961. MR. Hosein Effendi was entrusted to lead the Faculty of Law and Drs. Moersalim was entrusted to lead the Faculty of Economics.
MR. Rusli Darmawan was entrusted to administer education process at the Faculty of Law , and Drs. P. Sitohang led Faculty of Economics with Drs. Subki E. Harun as the secretary of the Faculty.
In order to help with study completion of the students of the Sriwijaya University branches of Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics, upon the approval of the President of Sriwijaya University, in 1964, an affiliation with the University of Indonesia in Jakarta was formed.
Expectation of Lampung societies to have a separate public university came true with the issue of the Decree of Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP) No. 195/1965. It stated that since September 23, 1965, the University of Lampung ( Unila ) was established, which at that time had two Faculties, i.e. Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economic. Kusno Danupoyo, Governor / KDH of Lampung Province was appointed as Chairman of the Presidium of the University of Lampung.
In 1966, Governor Kusno Danupoyo was replaced by Hi . Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam and by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 73/1966, the establishment of the University of Lampung was confirmed.
The establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture based on the University of Lampung Presidium Decree No. 756 / KPTS / 1967 was accomplished and commenced while waiting for the decree from the Minister of Education.
In 1968 , the Institute of Teaching and Education ( IKIP) Jakarta Branch Tanjung Karang with the decision of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 1/1968 , integrated into the University of Lampung as the Faculty of Teaching and Education . The University of Lampung, hence, advanced further and developed with time. The establishment of the Faculty of Engineering started upon the University of Lampung Presidium Decree No. 227 / KPTS / Pres / 1968 on July 5, 1968. However, due to various constraints, this faculty could not continue and by Decree No. 101 / B- / 11/72, the Faculty of Engineering no longer accepted new students and students of the Faculty were transferred to other faculties.
Faculty of Agriculture officially established on March 16, 1973 as confirmed by the decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0206/1973.
With the support of the Regional Government of Lampung Province, The Preparatory Committee for Faculty of Civil Engineering was set on January 13, 1978.
In the Academic Year 1986/1987, Sociology and Public Administration study programs were opened under the auspices of the Faculty of Law. In order to organize the academic program, Preparatory Faculty of Social and Political Science was set up. The goal of this committee was to established faculty of social and politic.
In the Academic Year of 1989/1990, Biology and Chemistry study programs were opened under the auspices of the Faculty of Agriculture. In order to administer the academic program, Preparatory Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was set up.
Non-degree Faculty of Technology was changed its status into the Faculty of Engineering by decision of the Rector of the University of Lampung No. 08 / KPTS / R / 1991 dated July 6, 1991.
Number of faculties in the University of Lampung increased as the Preparatory Faculty of Social and Politic (FISIP) officially became Faculty of Social and Politic (FISIP) by the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture No. 0334/0/1995. Likewise with the Preparatory Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, officially became the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) by the Decree of Minister of Education and Culture No. 0334/0/1995.
The University of Lampung began to organize its Post Graduate Program. It was started by Post Graduate Program for Master of Agroindustry Technology and Master of Law, followed by Master of Management and Master of Agronomy in 2000 and Master of Education Technology in 2001.
Following the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education (SK Dikti) No. 3195 / D / I / 2003, the University of Lampung was licensed to organize medical education program, and in academic year 2002/2003 the program began receiving new students.
Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lampung officially opened according to Decree of the Minister of National Education No. 8/439 / M.PAN-RB / 2/2011 dated on February 16, 2011. Until now, the University of Lampung currently has eight faculties, i.e. Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Teaching and Education, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine.
Initially, the University of Lampung resided in three (3) locations, Hasanuddin Street No. 34; Jendral Suprapto Street No. 61 Tanjung Karang; and Sorong Cimeng Street Teluk Betung. Since the year 1973/1974, the University of Lampung opened its Gedong Meneng Campus, and now, all faculties are already in this campus.
Between year 1960 to 1965, the University of Lampung was led by a coordinator. Since December 25, 1965 to May 28, 1973, the University of Lampung was led by a presidium, chaired by the Governor of Lampung Province. Starting from May 1973 until now, the University of Lampung is led by a rector.
