The History of the University of Lampung

1959

The idea to establish the University of Lampung was first initiated in 1959 by the pioneers, Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam, Tjan Djiit Soe, Nadirsjah Zaini, M.A., and Hilman Hadikusuma. The pioneers then formed committees to prepare for the establishment of the university. The committees were grouped into two according to their purposes: i) the Committee for Higher Education Expansion and Establishment (P3SL: Panitia Pendirian dan Perluasan Sekolah Lanjutan; and ii) the Committee for Lampung Higher Education Foundation Establishment (P3YPTL: Panitia Persiapan Pembentukan Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Lampung). The former was located in Tanjung Karang, and was chaired by Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam and Tjan Djiit Soe, as the head and the secretary of the committee, respectively. The latter was established in Jakarta, on August 20th 1959 and was chaired by Nadirsjah Zaini, M.A., and the Secretary, Hilman Hadikusuma. On January 19th 1960, the P3SL Committee had the first meeting with Lampung community leaders in preparation for the establishment of a higher education institution. The meeting resulted in recommendations, one of which was the amendment of the name of the committee, the P3SL into the Establishment Committee of Faculty and Higher Education Expansion (P3SLF: Panitia Pendirian Perluasan Sekolah Lanjutan dan Fakultas) and Zainal Abidin Pagar Alam and Tjan Djiit Soe remained the head of the committee and the secretary, respectively.

It was located at Jalan Hasanudin No. 34 Teluk Betung and was formerly owned and occupied by Hak Haw. On September 7, 1960, the P3SLF and P3YPTL merged, which was then named the Lampung Higher Education Trustees Foundation (YPPLT: Yayasan Pembina Perguruan Tinggi Lampung). It was ratified through the document by the Deputy Notary named M.M Efendi No. 24 dated November 23rd 1960.
