(Unila): Six students majoring in the biological science at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Unila took part in student mobility activities organized by the Faculty of Science Universiti Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 17 to 24 September 2023.
The student mobility program was attended by students from different countries, such as the Philippines and Cambodia.
It aims to facilitate cultural exchange between countries, providing students with opportunities to have times experience in studying abroad, to interact with international teaching staff and students, and to participate in scientific discussions about current issues.
The Chancellor of Unila, Prof. Lusmeilia Afriani, encouraged the students to improve their academic achievement, hoping that the Unila students’ participation in this program brought the university’s reputation in the international levels.
After the opening ceremony, the students attended a lecture class on science communication with Dr. Kenneth Fung, discussing the importance of science communication with social issues.
The lecture provided participants with insight of the scientific writing techniques required to convey information to society. They also attended a number of classes, such as Fluids Dynamics, Biotechnology and Sustainable Agriculture, and Chemistry, to improve their understanding of science and technology.
The participants were also scheduled to visit campus mini farms and 3D Printing classes, providing them with opportunities to develop their creativity in creating three-dimensional miniatures.
The following programs undertook exploration in Rimba Ilmu, a conservation forest at Universiti Malaya, where they had an opportunity to view biodiversity and to understand more deeply about plants. The herbarium and green house research center in the forest are also important learning places.
They were also invited to visit a number of interesting places in Malaysia, including Batu Caves, where they studied the phenomenon of limestone formation and Hindu culture there.
The highlight of the student mobility program was the closing ceremony attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya and other campus officials. All participants received a certificate of their participation in this program.
Dr. Mispan expressed his appreciation to all participants for their participation in the program, hoping that the following program would involve participants from more numbers of countries.
