(Unila): Unila students doing field work study succeeded in turning cassava leaves into cookies as part of their work program (progja) in Bujung Tenuk Kagungan Dalem village, located in Menggala District, the chief production of cassava in the region.
Winda Apriyanti, Unila Agrotechnology Department student, said that cassava plants can be turned into multipurpose products, such as chips, organic fertilizer and animal feed.
So far, a cassava farmer in Bujung Tenuk Kagungan Dalem village, the residents had no ideas of this sort of innovation that they sold their cassava in the form of raw materials. The innovation invented by the Unila students contributed to MSMs.
The students demonstrated their skills of making cookies from processed cassava leaves before the residents. Gracela Natalie, member of the KKN group and person in charge of activities, said that these cookies could be a new innovation that supports MSMEs.
Having done surveys, no cookies made from processed cassava leaves available in a number of market places. This would be potential to run business of cassava leaves-made cookies.
According to Gracela the cookies made from processed cassava leaves are not only safe, but also nutritious. Adding processed cassava leaf flour into cookies can add nutritional value. The balancing process carried out in processing cassava leaves into flour makes it safe to use.
The residents warmly welcomed the students demonstrating their skills of making cookies, actively participating in this program. It was the first time and something new for the residents to witness the demonstration of making cookies from cassava leaves.
