(Unila): The National Statistics Agency recorded that Indonesia’s population growth from 2010-2020 significantly rose with an average of 1.25% per year.
The increasing rate of population growth will necessarily reduce more agricultural lands while food needs continue to increase.
The condition may result in a large-scale forest clearing as a conversion of agricultural land, as almost all of Indonesians consume rice as their staple food.
The challenge has motivated a number of students from the University of Lampung (Unila) to initiate innovation on purpose to solve problems.
The group of students was led by Mahfud Sidik (Biology 2019) with another three team members, Eva Selviana (Mathematics 2018), Putri Septiarini (Chemistry Education 2018), and Kishy Dhea Herlanda (Biology 2019).
The idea of “Integrated Smart Building for Sustainable Farming as a Solution for Food Security and Land Limitations in the Future” under the Priambodo’s supervision was funded by Dikti with the Student Creativity Week scheme for Constructive Futuristic Ideas (PKM – GFK.)
The building takes the form of four-story building and it is designed as a livestock room as well as agriculture purposes integrated with the MFC (Microbial Fuel Cell) system.
Smart Building Design for Sustainable Farming
The idea has been published through the Unila TV Youtube channel and has been presented at the 2nd Ulicoste (the University of Lampung International Conference on Science, Technology, and Environment) 2021, as well as other social media.
Currently, the Unila Research and Community Service Center for the Intellectual Property (LPPM) has the innovation registered for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).
The innovation is expected to contribute to the needs for foods and the way out of land distortion in the future so that the conversion of forest functions to agricultural land will necessarily decrease which in turns, forest sustainability is maintained. This is in line with United Nations’ principles of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). [PR Team]
