(Unila): Two teams from the University of Lampung (Unila) Student Creativity Program (PKM) won three medals at the 33rd National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas) 2020. The awards were announced at the closing ceremony of Pimnas, Saturday, November 30, 2020 which was broadcasted live from UGM, Yogyakarta.

The Constructive Futuristic Ideas Group (GFK) chaired by Agus Wibowo from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), succeeded in initiating the Green Campus. The team won a gold medal in the Presentation category and a bronze medal for the Poster category.

Meanwhile, the Natural Sciences Research (PE) group chaired by Chandra Pratiwi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FMIPA) won a silver medal in the Poster category.

The acquisition of three medals successfully brought Unila to be ranked 9 or 10 in the top 10 Pimnas Medal Winners in 2020 among nine other leading universities.

Alhamdullilah (Thank God and God bless us), this year Unila was able to secure a place among the top ten universities in the Pimnas event organized by the Centre for National Achievements of the Ministry of Education and Culture and hosted at Gadjah Mada University, 25th – 28th November, 2020,” said Prof. Dr. Yulianto, M.S.,Vice-Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs, in a press conference in his office.

Prof. Yulianto also said the two teams have long been struggling to win the medals. They have been working on Pimnas since 2019. They first prepared a PKM proposal to be uploaded to Simbelmawa, following up the result of an internal evaluation done by the PKM Student Affairs Team Unila.

At the time, Unila managed to upload 500 proposals to compete against some 65,000 proposals in total. The proposals were then reviewed by the evaluation teams from Dikti. Fortunately, 22 proposals from Unila were finally selected and shortlisted.

Guided by lecturers and the student affairs PKM team, groups of students who passed the Pimnas simulated presentations and made posters as an attempt to prepare the teams for judging.

Judging for presentations and posters took place on 26th – 27th November, 2020, respectively. The event summit was closed with the winners’ announcement on 28th November, 2020.

“Our sincere gratitude goes to all parties including students, supervisors, student affairs team, heads of departments, vice deans of student affairs and alumni, and deans who have synergized with the success of the 33rd Pimnas 2020,” said Yulianto.

The PKM GFK Team Leader, Agus Wibowo, in his interview, said that he and his team were very proud for sure of being able to outperform leading universities such as, ITB, UI, Unhas, and UB for the team’s scheme. He also claimed that the awards were perfect in the sense that they represented each judging category (presentation and poster).

Guided by lecturers, the proposal entitled “Smart Integrated Aquaculture Management, the Concept of Aquaculture Governance for Sustainable Fisheries” was able to attract and make a deep impression on the judges.

The proposal was initiated by the 2017 Fisheries and Marine students together with two other students, Imam Hidayatulloh Angga Wijaya PD (majoring in law) and Menik Mujayani (majoring in biology), Chandra Pratiwi, the PKM FE Team Leader, said that the team’s proposal entitled “Rapid System for Detection of Diabetes Mellitus with E-nose Based on Sensor Matrix and Arduino” followed up a recommendation from Dr. Junaidi, S.Si., M.Sc., the accompanying lecturer.

The title was chosen based on the Basic Health Research for Health Workers in Lampung Province in 2009 concerning diabetes mellitus cases in Lampung Province. E-nose technology provides a cost-effective alternative to perform VOC analysis in breathing. This is intended as solutions to undertake blood sugar checks which are usually relatively long and inefficient.

He also encouraged new students to participate in Pimnas event in the following years. “Students need to keep up the good work for Pimnas so that they come as the champion of Pimnas teams are going to pass Pimnas in the following year “he said.
