(Unila): Leni Rumiyanti M.Sc., a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), the University of Lampung (Unila), won the “Best Oral Presentation” award at the “The 2024 7th International Conference on Material Engineering Research (ICMER 2024)”, on 20 April 2024, on Jeju Island, South Korea.

Leni won the award for her research entitled “Effect of Benzotriazole-Silver-1 Based Capping System on Porosity of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Synthesized using Eco-Friendly Materials of Rice Husk”.

The topic of her presentation is a follow-up to her dissertation previously presented in Fukuoka, Japan, in November 2023. She made an innovation in the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with benzotrizole corrosion inhibitor, adding benzotrizole-silver capping system as a new approach to corrosion protection which consists of the mixture of benzotriazole (BTA) and silver.

The former is a well-known corrosion inhibitor and the latter has excellent antimicrobial properties. The mixture of the two substances in a capping system creates a synergistic effect leading to better protection against corrosion and microbial attack.

Leni’s research is concerned with the development of mesoporous silica nanoparticles with benzotrizole-silver capping system for corrosion inhibitor nanocontainer application, the materials of which are all natural, replacing commercial precursors with rice husk silica.

The research process underwent several stages, including the synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) using the Sol-Gel method, loading of benzotriazole corrosion Inhibitor (BTA), and application to metal (steel) as a corrosion inhibitor nanocontainer. The utilisation of rice husk as an environmentally friendly precursor is regarded as one of the innovations promoted in this research.

She described the constraints of sorting out initial synthesis process and limited tools and materials available in the laboratory. However, she could successfully finish her research. Her research findings significantly contribute to new knowledge and are dedicated to Unila in particular, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA).

With the passion and commitment to continue to excel, Leni hopes to make a greater contribution to the advancement of science and technology. Through her experience and knowledge, Leni is also active in contributing to international publications, both through international conferences and articles in reputable international journals.

With this brilliant achievement, Leni was very excited about being able to compete in the world-class research, hopping that this may motivate young people to continue to contribute to new knowledge. [PR Team]
