(Unila): Students from 8 universities around Indonesia, i.e., the University of Lampung (Unila), Siliwangi University, Yogyakarta State University, University of North Sumatra, Khairun University, Bogor Agricultural Institute, and Pattimura University carried out joint community services at Pasanea village, North West Seram, Central Maluku.
They were training Pasanea residents to make a hand-made coconut shell craft as there was an abundant supply of coconut shell in the village in which the majority of land is made use of a coconut plantation. The coconut plantation results in a number of such products as baked-coconut the so-called copra, coconut oil, and charcoal from coconut shells.
The training was put in place in the village hall and was attended by teenagers, especially high school students. It involved a number of parties to share their roles in the training. For example, the state-owned enterprises provided the community with the coconut shells.
The series of activities first began with the provision of materials supplied by coconut shell craftsmen, and then it was followed by the practice of making bowls from coconut shells assisted by craftsmen starting from the process of gluing the base of the bowl, decorating the coconut shell, and finally producing products with sales value.
This training was expected to motivate teenagers of Pasanea village to utilize the coconut shells which had long been abandoned in their village. [PR Team]
