(Unila): Prof. Diding Suhandy, a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture (F.P) Unila was selected as one of the recipients of the ‘Best Presenter’ award at the 5th International Conference on Agricultural Technology, Engineering, and Environmental Sciences (the 5th ICATES) 2023 which was held in Banda Aceh, 20 September 2023.

Prof. Diding presented the results of his research entitled “Discrimination Between Real and Fake Honey Using Portable Fluorescence Spectroscopy and SIMCA”.

The research is collaboration between Unila as the leader, and Lampung State Polytechnic, Padjadjaran University, and Brawijaya University, funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture through a domestic collaborative research (PKDN) grant.

It develops technology based on spectral data with a portable spectrometer connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth to test the authenticity of honey. This technology can detect the difference between real and fake honey using the Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) method.

It  is expected to provide honey farmers and consumers with benefits with food traceability and protection of high-value agricultural products. Prof. Diding also introduced the concept of SpectralPrint as a future technology that can identify food authenticity from ultraviolet to terahertz wavelengths, saying that the research is very important to undertake in efforts to create safe, healthy and quality food for the Indonesian people.
