(Unila): Starting a new year, the University of Lampung (henceforth Unila) once again attained outstanding achievement. Unila’s Webometrics ranking has risen six positions, going from 30th place in July 2020 to 24th in January 2021. This means that the university is ranked 24th among Indonesia’s top 100 public and private universities.

Webometrics Team Leader Muhamad Komarudin enthusiastically explained that of the three indicators assessed by the Cybermetric Laboratory in Spain, in terms of impact, openness, and excellence, the value of excellence tremendously rose.

“Unila has experienced an exceptional increase in the value of excellence, taken from a total of Unila’s recorded publications and citations successfully searched by the Cybermetric Laboratory team”, said Komarudin when interviewed by the unila.ac.id website team in his office in mid-February 2021.

He further explained that last semester the ranking of the excellence indicator was at the position of 4,278, and in January it had risen to the position of 3,526 worldwide.

However, the other two indicators, i.e., impact (news quality) and openness (Unila’s researchers recorded on Google Scholar), dropped sharply, to the position of 1,313 and 5,954 worldwide, respectively.

He is grateful, however, that the decrease in these two indicators can be covered by the increase in the value of excellence indicator. “The exceptional value of the excellence indicator can compensate the decline in the other two”, he said.

Komarudin added, the increase in Webometrics’ ranking position this semester was due to the hard work of his team in conducting neat data collection, especially ensuring the publications and citations of authors with Unila affiliation.

“We carried out the data collection neatly, with extra efforts. We carefully made sure that every single Unila-affiliated author should be included”, said Komarudin.

The team found numerous Unila-affiliated authors publishing in Scopus-indexed journals, but the authors did not get connected with Unila, leading to zero contribution to the Unila’s university ranking position.

“We actually formed two teams to focus on increasing the values of excellence and openness indicators, however, the excellence indicator seemed to contribute the most. In the coming years, we will work even harder to increase the value of the openness indicator. We need to ‘clean up’ the Google Scholar profiles of 210 authors from Unila, making sure that no publication other than Unila authors are claimed. This way enables us to re-claim our authors’ works claimed in other institutions. Meanwhile, to increase the value of the impact indicator, we are planning to collaborate with more reputable universities to refer to our website contents”, Komarudin explained.

The Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, and ICT of Unila, Prof. Suharso, Ph.D., appreciated the teams’ solid performance in improving the achievements of the Webometrics university ranking.

“Of course, this increase is inextricably linked to the entire Unila academic community’s dedication to becoming better”, said Suharso

He emphasized that not only will Webometrics improve university ranking, but it will also continue to strengthen Unila’s achievements in all areas, including higher education cluster rankings, in our efforts to be among top ten universities by 2025. [Public Relations Team]
