BECOMING a lecturer and a professor were the unexpected things for Suharno. Thanks to his hard work and independence, as a professor of disaster and geothermal, he was able to do many things. Now, he only wants to be useful to others.

Little Suharno followed his parents moved. Since he was a year old, the man who has born in Surakarta, July 16, 1962,  migrated with his parents. They migrated from Surakarta Central Java to Lampung around 1963.

Suharno’s parents moved intentionally to get a better life because they lived in a place that was insufficient to support the lives of his six children. Suharno grew up in the Sukoharjo, a transmigration area that is now part of the Pringsewu Regency.

His childhood went through differently from his age. Besides playing, Suharno also had to help his parents’ work. His father was a farmer who also trader. Since childhood, he had been trained to be independent by helping his parents to trade.

Since junior high school, Suharno had often participated in his parent’s business. Traveling from one village to another village to buy a variety of agricultural products became his routine. With his bicycle, he bought coffee, pepper, and ginger and sold it to larger traders. Before going to school, the youngest of six siblings also had to help someone who had a copra business at home.

The hectic activities that he had to endure did not hamper his schooling. Although he went to school while trading, the alumnus of SMAN 1 Pringsewu admitted he always became the champion in the class from elementary school to high school.

There was an interesting experience had happened when he was in the class of VII.  Suharno claimed to have skipped Physics class because he preferred to sell at the market. As a result, the school principal, who was also his Physics teacher, scolded him. Then he was told to do the assignment.

Because he was good at mathematic and was able to do the assignment correctly, the school principal did not get angry. Even though his family’s economy was getting better and his parents were capable enough to pay for his school, Suharno was already used to being independent. He kept continuing these activities when he was in high school. He used the profit for personal needs and partly to buy textbooks.

Being an independent person made his parents rarely sent him money during his college time. After he graduated from school, suharno received a test and accepted at Gajah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta. Suharno lived in a boarding house around campus. During that time, his parents more often sent him agricultural products rather than money.

After finished his study in Physics, Suharno decided to work in a mining company. A month later, he chose to continue his education. The reason was not only because to continue his study, but also because he felt uneasy to work in a mining company because he had to work offshore for one month.

After finishing his study, Suharno decided to become a lecturer. At the same time, he got a lot of offers to work at some companies, but still, he chose to become a lecturer of industrial engineering at Trisakti University Jakarta and at the University of Lampung

The man who used to dream to be an ambassador, now chooses to teach the knowledge he had. This father of nine children wants to be useful to others and now it seems to be in line with his profession

The title of professor he bears is not without struggle. However, his life journey increasingly made Suharno has much knowledge that he now want to share as benefits to the community.

To Foster the Young Generation

Reflecting on the journey of his life, he wants the young generation to be more independent and can do much for others. This is not only conveyed by the words but also by educating young people through formal education at the University of Lampung. He has also established Nurul Huda Lampung Education Foundation. “Allhamdulillah, currently there are several young people who study at my school,” Suharno said.

The foundation he initiates, is an educational institution that combines religious with formal education. The students are not only from Lampung but also from the outside of Lampung.  Nurul Huda Lampung Education Foundation located in the south Lampung.

The concept he made is that the young generation not only learns about formal education but also learn from the spiritual side. According to the man who is also the chairman of the Indonesian Geothermal Association of Sumbagsel, human intelligence must be balanced between intelligence, spiritual, and social intelligence.

Suharno said that during the lectures he not only provided lecture material limited to theories, techniques, etc. He also often shares his life experiences that could be used as examples for others to live

One of the values of life that he always applied in lectures is discipline, “I will not allow my students to enter the class if I have already in the class,” Suharno affirmed. Because he thinks the value of discipline needs to be owned by the younger generation.

Now, even though Suharno does have a lot of activities, he feels happy because he can do more for himself, his family and others. He hopes that someday the young generation can do more than him to develop the country. []
